My husband I had only been married a month when our pet rabbit died, and we were devastated. We weren’t sure if we wanted a new pet and this went on for about 6 months.
One day while watching a show with family, I saw a commercial for Overstock.com advertising their new pet adoption feature. I thought it was kind of interesting but forgot about it until a few days later, when I was at work on my break and decided to see if it was up and running and how it all worked.
Seemed weird to adopt a pet from a website, right? So I went on and put in our area code and that we were looking for a cat, since we live in an apartment and aren’t in the market for a dog for a long time. It brought up all of these kittens that were at pet stores and pictures of them, but I was more interested in the fact that it showed animals available for adoption at the animal control shelter. I scrolled through and came to a dead stop at picture of little black kitten with huge ears and a little curl in her tail that they were calling “Bellatrix.” She had been found just a month previously and was only now available for adoption. That was it, one look at her and I knew she was coming home with me. I sent the picture to my husband, who was more reserved about getting a pet, so we went to look at her. As soon as she saw us, she calmed down. She just sat there and purred and let us hold and pet her and even though there were dogs barking and cats meowing everywhere, she never got scared or meowed a single time. We took her home that day, renamed her Shado, and she’s been our little daughter ever since! She’s so sweet, cute, and of course spoiled and we can’t imagine not having her.
